Absentee Voting

HOW CAN I RECEIVE AN ABSENTEE BALLOT?

After Proposal 2022-2 passed in the State of Michigan, amending many facets of voting, there are 2 options:

  • Go to State of Michigan Voter Information Center.  Click on "Apply for an Absentee Ballot Online" on the left side of the screen.  Follow the prompts and complete the form.

    OR
  • Contact the City Clerk's office at 586.469.6800, option 4 to request an absentee ballot application.  Applications can be returned as follows:
1) mailed to City Clerk's Office, One Crocker Blvd, Mount Clemens, MI  48043,
2) E-mailed to cmartin@mountclemens.gov or ncarter@mountclemens.gov, or
3) Dropped off at the Election Box located outside the main entrance of City Hall, the box located inside City Hall affixed to the wall outside the Cashier's Office or the box on the 2nd floor at the Clerk's Office window.

The ballot will be mailed to you after it is received by the Clerk's Office.

OR
  • **NEW** Complete the "Permanent Absentee Ballot" form and be put on the permanent ballot list.  This form allows you to receive ballots automatically without completing applications each year.  You can find the form to the left.

DO I HAVE TO CALL EVERY TIME THERE IS AN ELECTION AND REQUEST AN ABSENTEE VOTING APPLICATION?

While a signed application is necessary to issue a ballot for every election, the City Clerk's office maintains a Permanent Absentee Ballot List.  All voters on this list will be automatically mailed an application for every election.  Voters who would like to be on the Permanent Absentee Ballot List may contact the City Clerk's office to be added to the list, or sign up online at State of Michigan Voter Information Center.

Voters on the Permanent Absentee Ballot List who do not wish to vote by absentee ballot for a particular election may simply discard the application that was mailed to them.  Voters will not be removed from the Permanent Absentee Ballot List when they choose not to vote by absentee ballot for an election.

CAN I PICK UP BALLOTS FOR MY FAMILY MEMBERS?

Though you are able to pick up and drop off absentee ballot applications for members of your household, State of Michigan Election Law DOES NOT allow election staff to release actual ballots to anyone but the voter.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER I DROP OFF/MAIL MY VOTED BALLOT?
Election staff will document receipt of your ballot including recording it with the State of Michigan.  The received ballot is then locked in a secure area accessible only by the City Clerk's office.  You may track your ballot online at: https://mvic.sos.state.mi.us/Voter/Index.

DEADLINE TO APPLY FOR ABSENTEE BALLOT AND TO RETURN ABSENTEE BALLOT.
Online and mail requests must be received by the City Clerk's office no later than 5 p.m. the Friday before the election.  In person requests can be made at the City Clerk's office anytime up to 4 p.m. on the day prior to the election.  New voters who register to vote on Election Day at the City Clerk's office can vote by absentee ballot at the Clerk's office, if they prefer, or go to vote in person at their precinct.

All absentee ballots must be turned into their City Clerk's Office by 8:00 p.m. Election Day.

HOW DO I SPOIL MY BALLOT?
If a voter never received their mailed ballot or would like to make a change to the ballot that they already returned, they may spoil their ballot and request a new one.  To spoil a ballot a voter must:
  • Request in writing that they would like to spoil the ballot that they were issued with this form:  Request to Spoil Ballot.
  • If the ballot has already been received by the City Clerk's office, this request must be received by 5:00 p.m. on the Friday prior to the election.
  • If the ballot has not been returned to the City Clerk's Office, it may only be spoiled in person up to the day prior to the election by 4:00 p.m.
  • There is NO option on Election Day to spoil an absentee ballot that has been received by the City Clerk.
