Voters

Voting is an important part of being a Mount Clemens resident, and we want to make it easy for you to understand the process. Below, you’ll find information on eligibility, how and where to register, deadlines to keep in mind, and guidance for students.

Eligibility

To vote in Mount Clemens, you must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Be at least 18 years old on or before Election Day
  • Have lived in Mount Clemens for at least 30 days
  • Not be incarcerated

How to Register

You can register to vote:

  • Online through the Michigan Secretary of State
  • At the Secretary of State’s office
  • At the County Clerk’s office
  • At the Mount Clemens City Clerk’s office

Absentee Voting

You can request an absentee ballot online through the State of Michigan Voter Information Center or by contacting the Mount Clemens City Clerk’s office. Applications may be returned by mail, email (cmartin@mounclemens.gov or ncarter@mountclemens.gov), or at one of the secure drop boxes at City Hall. Once your application is processed, a ballot will be mailed to you. Voters may also join the permanent absentee ballot list, which allows ballots to be mailed automatically for each election without submitting a new application every year.

Yes, Michigan Election Law requires that voters must present photo identification at the polls or sign an affidavit attesting that they are not in possession of photo identification.  Acceptable forms of identification include:

  • State of Michigan Driver’s License or Personal Identification License
  • Current Out of State Driver’s License or Personal Identification License
  • Federal or State-Issued Photo Identification
  • U.S. Passport
  • Military Identification with Photo
  • Student Identification Card with Photo from a High School or Accredited Institution of Higher Learning
  • Tribal Identification Card with Photo

All students who are at least 18 years of age on or before Election Day may vote as long as they meet all other eligibility requirements:

  • If you are a resident of Michigan and go to school in Michigan you can register at either address.
  • If you are a resident of Michigan but go to school outside of Michigan, register at your home address to vote in Michigan elections.
  • If you are not a resident of Michigan but go to school here, you may register at your school address to vote in Michigan.

Voters in the City of Mount Clemens use ES&S DS200 tabulators. The City of Mount Clemens also provides the ES&S ExpressVote ballot marking device to accommodate the needs of voters with hearing, vision and physical impairments. This allows voters the opportunity to independently and privately vote a ballot.

Though you are able to pick up and drop off absentee ballot applications for members of your household, State of Michigan Election Law DOES NOT allow election staff to release actual ballots to anyone but the voter.

You can return your completed absentee ballot in several ways:

  • Drop Boxes

    • Municipal Building, 1 Crocker Blvd (open 24 hours)
    • Cairns Community Center, 58 Orchard St (open 24 hours)
    • Inside the Municipal Building, 1 Crocker Blvd (during business hours)
  • In Person
    Hand deliver your ballot to the City Clerk’s Office on the second floor of the Municipal Building.

By Mail
Use the prepaid return envelope included with your ballot and send it through the U.S. Postal Service.

All absentee ballots must be received by the City Clerk’s Office no later than 8:00 p.m. on Election Day. It’s best to return your ballot as early as possible to avoid risking delays

No. Mount Clemens absentee ballots must be returned to a Mount Clemens drop box or the City Clerk’s office. Ballots placed in another municipality’s box (such as Clinton Township, Harrison Township, or Detroit) will not be counted.

Election staff will document receipt of your ballot including recording it with the State of Michigan. The received ballot is then locked in a secure area accessible only by the City Clerk’s office. You may track your ballot online at: https://mvic.sos.state.mi.us/Voter/Index.

If a voter never received their mailed ballot or would like to make a change to the ballot that they already returned, they may spoil their ballot and request a new one. To spoil a ballot a voter must:

  • Request in writing that they would like to spoil the ballot that they were issued with this form: Request to Spoil Ballot.
  • If the ballot has already been received by the City Clerk’s office, this request must be received by 5:00 pm on the second Friday prior to the election.
  • If the ballot has not been returned to the City Clerk’s Office, it may only be spoiled in person up to the day prior to the election by 4:00 p.m.
  • There is NO option on Election Day to spoil an absentee ballot that has been received by the City Clerk.
